Nyaung Shwe is the jump off point for tourists who are visiting Inle Lake. It’s here where you could find hotels, hostels, restaurants and travel agencies that could arrange your trip to various points of Inle Lake. It also serve as the docking area for long tails boat that takes tourists and locals alike to other towns and villages around Inle Lake.
Nyaung Shwe may just be a jump off point to Inle Lake but it’s a town worth exploring. The town is quite clean, laid back and very relaxing. There may not be a lot of popular sights to see but nevertheless it’s a town that I’d be happy to stay for a few weeks or a month just lazily biking around the countryside or eating Shan noodles in the morning.
Here are some pictures of Nyaung Shwe:
Wooden Bridge at the left side of the Marina
Elementary School… the building is made mostly from wood
Souvenir Shop
Nice huh! Fishermen of Inle
Maybe in the future, this street will be full of huge hotels
Beautiful!!!

Locals playing football
Fishing for dinner
One of the largest trees I have ever seen in my life
Laundry time

So beautiful!
I hope they retain this kind of rural charm for the years to come

Newly planted rice

Alms giving every morning

This town will surely change in the coming years especially now that Myanmar has opened its doors to mass tourism. Maybe in the coming years, more roads will be paved and there will be more hotels and guesthouses in the area. I hope that despite of the upcoming developments and despite of the new infrastructures that will be built, the people of Nyaung Shwe will maintain their cleanliness and the abundance of lush and beautiful trees around town.

It is charming. It is always kind of sad when places modernize, something always gets lost. Beautiful photos!
Your photos took my heart away to Myanmar. I know I have to get myself out there soon.
oh wow talk about a step back in time. pretty cool
Looks peaceful and relaxing — definitely somewhere that I would like to visit before the region bows down to western homogenization all in the name of tourism money :/
