How to Choose your Ski Chalet

Staying in a ski chalet adds a sense of authenticity and freedom to your ski holiday – allowing you to experience all that is on offer. This accommodation is an essential part of the skiing experience and choosing a chalet is easier than you may think.

Staying in a chalet enables all transfers to and from the airport, ski hire and lift passes to be arranged for you. There are two options available with ski chalets. One of these is a catered chalet where cooking and cleaning is also included.

The other option is a self-catered chalet holiday where you are responsible for your own meals.

Before you choose what option to go for there are a few things which you need to consider.

First of all you need to evaluate your budget. This should cover the costs of food, drink, equipment, travel and any extra expenditure you might face – such as lift passes.

Once you have verified these costs you can identify how much you have left to spend on accommodation. Ski chalets vary in price, depending on the level of luxury you choose, and this means they are available for all budgets.

Once you have decided on your budget, you can then choose between self-catered and catered chalets.

Catered ski chalets can be more convenient as there may be more time to ski but it could also restrict what you can eat and when. It may be possible to negotiate with the company or owner on the price if you have specific tastes or dietary requirements and this is always worth consideration.

With catered chalets, there is the option of business-managed chalets and owner-managed chalets.

Owner-managed chalets often seem more appealing but it is important to remember some owners may be more concerned with their property that with providing maximum customer satisfaction.

The more luxurious chalets are often those which are business-managed. They also offer a more professional service that revolves around ensuring the customer is enjoying their trip. This obviously has an impact on the price and travellers should balance cost against service to get the best deal.

Something you may like to consider when researching your chalet is the range of facilities that they have to offer. Depending on your requirements you may like to find a chalet which offers en-suites, fireplaces, Jacuzzis and luxurious kitchen facilities.

The location of your chalet may also be important. Alpine retreats and local villages are popular with skiers and offer stunning views alongside convenient access to the slopes.
