James’s blog would probably be one of the longest running travel blogs that I know of. He’s been blogging since May 2005. A travel web developer by profession, James is also a good photographer which you would notice in his blog which is full of descriptive pictures. His photos will definitely take you to various destinations.

Here’s Flip’s short interview with James.

How did you discover your passion for travelling?
“I went to the UK in 1999 on a working holiday visa, which Australians are able to do. While living in London I got to travel around Britain and Continental Europe. During this time I realised how much I love to travel. Not just the time travelling but also planning and reading about it.”
What’s the most horrible experience that you’ve ever had?
“I guess all those late planes, trains and buses add up to alot of time.”
What’s the best travel experience that you’ve ever had?
“There are so many it’s hard to choose. A time that stands out in my mind was a milestone event, when I first set out on the working nomad life. I left my last job in 2003 to start working from home. A year later I spent 2 months in Paris as a location independent nomad. I ended up spending 6 months in Europe, working as I go.”

What’s the biggest realization that you’ve got out of travelling?
“It was while travelling that I found the business that I am in now. Before I was the traveller that I am today I had no career and no idea about what to do for work that would interest me. I knew that I wanted to work in the travel related field, so developing travel websites is what I ended up doing.”
What keeps you going? What keeps you motivated?
“Travel is now a business for me and an incorporated part of my life. I am like many small business owners/entrepenuers I have talked to, whereby my business is my passion. My mind never mentally clocks off at 5pm on fridays. I’m always thinking about things I see if it would make a good photo or travel story, or what I could add to a travel site i am working on right now.”

This is a silly and hypothetical one. If you would be given a chance to travel with a popular person or a celebrity, who would it be and why?
“That’s a tough question for a solo traveller! Seeing this is a “silly question”, can I make it sillier and add which popular person, dead or alive. In which case I would like to resurrect Sir Richard Burton from his tomb. He was a great explorer of the Victorian age. His feats included being the first known westerner to do the Haj to Mecca, and he also translated “1001 nights” to English.”
What could stop you travelling?
“Death”
Among the places that you’ve been to, which one fascinated you the most?
“I don’t have a favourite place in the world, it’s really too hard to pick. Like picking a favourite child. What I have learnt is that it is a fascinating world and that I am always grateful to be able to visit somewhere new.”
What’s the best travel advice that you could give a novice traveller?
“There is no right or wrong way to travel. Once you get started traveling you will find a style that is right for you.”
What do you think about yourself?
“Better to ask someone I know about that one.”

Great interview! I chuckled with him comment about liking all aspects of travel including “planning and reading about it” because that really describes me too!
I really do enjoy interviews like this one. Great insight and inspiration!
