How did you discover your passion for travelling?
“It was definitely during family vacations growing up. We would often drive 10, 15, 20, hours for a summer vacation and when we would drive past skylines of American cities I’d never been to, I was fascinated and would just stare out the window daydreaming about what they were like. ”
What’s the most horrible experience that you’ve had on the road
“I honestly can’t think of anything horrible that has ever happened to me on the road. Luckily, I’ve only had to suffer through minor inconveniences like losing a couple of my favorite hats and my iPod once. Knock. On. Wood.”
What’s the best travel experience that you’ve ever had?
“Spending the last two-and-a-half years travelling with my girlfriend Julia. It’s been a whirlwind that took us to a ton of amazing places, a few sucky ones, and then finally to Amsterdam.”
What’s the biggest realization that you’ve got out of travelling?
“You simply cannot see it all, so try not to stress about missing places. That being said, I can’t say I succeed at this all the time though. Also, nowhere is exactly as you envision it, and there are so many hidden places even in the most touristy places. Last, people are good, almost too good.”
What keeps you going? What keeps you motivated?
“Just the knowledge that there are so many more places to see, delicious things to eat, and tasty things to drink. Life is all about memories, and there is only one way to make them: go do stuff. I know I can’t see it all, but I wan’t to give it one heck of a try.”
This is a silly and hypothetical one. If you would be given a chance to travel with a popular person or a celebrity, who would it be and why?
“Tough one. It would be a toss up between Jamie Oliver or Zane Lamprey. They both seem to like to travel like I do, putting a big emphasis on food, fun, and drink.”
Where’s your favorite place in this planet and why?
As far as cities, Amsterdam, New Orleans, and Hong Kong are right near the top, and as far as general places, well, I am happiest at a European Christmas market or at an Asian or Mexican street food stall.”
What’s your best tip for newbie traveller?
“Do your best not to just copy every one else’s trip. If you are more into sports than art, go to a game, and if you like partying over historical walks, just do that.”
What’s the funniest and silliest thing you’ve ever done while travelling?
“One time I walked face-first into a metal street sign in Madrid and it was so loud people came to their windows to look out. It was like something you see in a movie. I swear, the thing vibrated back-and-forth going “bbbboing” forever.”
How do you fund your travels?
“Well, I do a lot of freelance writing and I top those funds off with a part-time job in the real world making coffees and cocktails.”
How do you keep yourself safe on your travels?
“Smile and make eye contact with everyone, especially anyone who looks like they may be up to something.”
What do you think about yourself?
“In the famous words of Todd Snider, “I think I’m an alright guy”. Seriously though, I try my best to have fun every moment of every day, and try my best to make those around me laugh and have fun too, and I hope that shows.”
“Well, I am trying my best to make WorldWideScott.com a place where people can come to get practical travel tips and learn from someone who has been there, done a ton of things right, but made a few mistakes along the way too. I try to keep things simple, light-hearted, and fun. Right now, most of the focus is on Europe since that is where I live now and somewhere I have travelled extensively.” – Scott Hartbeck of WorldWideScott.
