How Much Did I Spend in Phnom Penh

Phnom Penh was the last leg of our Cambodian trip before we decided to travel outside Southeast Asia. Staying in Phnom Penh for a month gave me ample time to walk around and explore the city and learn some basic photography skills and at the same time work on my other niche websites. It was also a nice break from staying in small towns in Cambodia.

Anyway, here’s a summary of how much I spent in Phnom Penh. I hope that it gives you an idea of how much the cost of living is in this city.

How Much Did I Spend in Phnom Penh

Accommodation

We had a hard time looking for hostels that offers studio rooms with kitchen so we just stayed in a hostel and asked for their monthly rate. If you’re going to stay in Phnom Penh for three months or more, I do recommend though that you rent an apartment instead so you could have a more comfortable stay in this city. I made a listings of online resources that could help you find an apartment in Phnom Penh.

Food

Food can be cheap if you want too. There are local eateries that offers $1 meal around the city and near hostels. I did splurge some time though and ate at some nice restaurants. I also went to some affordable buffets. :-) Check out my for some notes about it.

Transpo

Tuktuk around the city cost an average of $2 and moto is around $1. Bargain politely until you arrive at your acceptable price.

Tours

We didn’t book any tours anymore as we have been to Phnom Penh for a couple of times already. If you’re going to Tuol Sleng or Killing Fields I suggest that you just rent a moto or tuktuk instead of booking a tour from travel agencies as it may be cheaper. Shop around first for prices just to be sure.

Miscellaneous

After staying here for a month and comparing prices in neighbouring countries, I noticed that Phnom Penh is also a great place to buy electronics. I bought a phone and a camera in Phnom Penh ( which I didn’t include in the expense report anymore) and if you’re thinking of doing the same, check out my old post about it.
