This is my first time to feature in Meet the Nomads a dad and his son travelling together. Talon Windwalker and his son Tigger decided to travel to different countries which I think would be a very amazing journey for the both of them.
This proves the point that you can pursue your passion together with your family. He is a great inspiration to all dads out there.
Get to know him more and visit him and Tigger at their blog 1Dad1Kid.
Here’s my short interview with Talon.
How did you discover your passion for travelling?
“We did a lot of road trips when I was a child. Then as a teen I got to take a long road trip to Chiapas, Mexico, where we lived for a month. I was hooked instantly. I loved experiencing new cultures, foods, smells, sounds, variations of language, etc.”
What’s the most horrible experience that you’ve had on the road?
“I haven’t really had any “horrible” experiences. I’ve had some challenges, but nothing I would say was horrible.”
What’s the best travel experience that you’ve ever had?
“My best experience so far has been being able to travel with my son and see the world through his eyes.”

What’s the biggest realization that you’ve got out of travelling?
“The world is mostly full of kind, generous, caring and wonderful people.”
What keeps you going? What keeps you motivated?
“I think the way we’re traveling has helped me avoid that feeling. Even when I was doing shorter trips before, I never felt tired from it. It always energized me to go somewhere new and explore, and then to arrive home and get to share those experiences with friends energized me as well. I’ve always returned from a trip a different person in some fashion, and I think that helps as well. I also haven’t had the experience of having people in my life who think extensive travel is odd.”
This is a silly and hypothetical one. If you would be given a chance to travel with a popular person or a celebrity, who would it be and why?
“I would have loved to travel with Mother Teresa. I admire her so greatly, and I can’t even begin to imagine the full extent of how spending time with her would change me.”

Where’s your favourite place in this planet and why?
“Right now I would have to say Paris, France. That city stole my heart. I love the vibe, the energy, the culture, the food, the buildings. . . It’s just such an amazing place. An extremely close runner-up would be Kalibo, Philippines. I have never met a more friendly and joyful people in all my life. I learned so much about how to live better and about changing my own image about myself from spending almost 2 weeks there.”
What’s your best tip for newbie traveller?
“Travel can be a LOT cheaper than you think! Skip the 4- and 5-star all-inclusive places and go where you can be surrounded by locals.”
What’s the funniest and silliest thing you’ve ever done while travelling?
“I’ve probably done more than I care to remember, but the thing that stands out the most in my mind was while at Versailles. I was in the home that King Louis built for his mistress, and I wanted to make sure I had understood something correctly, so I went to a security guard and asked her a question in French. She had no idea what I was saying. I knew my French was anything but good, so I carefully worded my question and tried to pronounce better. Still no clue. I figured 3rd time was a charm, and then I started speaking and it hit me. I was asking the 1st part of the question in French but slipping into Spanish, which is more familiar to me, for the 2nd half. As soon as I realized that I laughed out loud which made her a bit nervous. We were both so happy when I finally managed to eke out a correct sentence.”
What do you think about yourself?
“What do I think of myself? Oh geez. Well, I think I’m an eclectic, funny, friendly, helpful, caring, adventurous, free spirit who refuses to live life in any way except on my terms.”

“1dad1kid.com started out as a way for me to update friends & family easily about our travels and this crazy lifestyle I’ve decided to give my son. As more and more people started reading it, I realized that perhaps it could be a tool to inspire other people to live their dreams as well, whatever those dreams may be. While the majority of articles have to do with travel and life as a nomadic expat, there is also plenty of personal stuff, as well as posts about parenting. Like me it’s pretty eclectic.” – Talon
Update:
Talon recently wrote a book titled, Rise of the Djall.

What a GREAT interview! Talon is a virtual friend and seeing him featured here is so great! I’m new to this blog, so thanks for the introduction. It is really great to find other travelers out there who are gypsies on a grand scale!
Finally a father and son tandem!
I am a sucker for such blogs as i am a family-oriented person. Thanks for sharing the link will follow them from now on
yeah i agree… they’re inspiring alot of families to pursue their passion as well.. talon once volunteered in the philippines
How sweet for a parent and child to discover places together. Utterly fantastic! I was fortunate as a child to have parents who travelled widely, which profoundly influenced my life. My 7-year-old niece constantly begs to travel with me (anywhere in Africa). While I do want her to experience the wonderment of travel, I am concerned what she would do if something were to befall me while on the road. (I guess that I can duct-tape some written instructions on her before we leave.)
Thanks for updating the post with my book info! Very much appreciated.
you’re welcome
