A story of a girl who left life in the big city to move to a beachside town in Costa Rica.
Abby’s story would definitely inspire anyone who wants to take a career break and pursue something that matters to them personally.
One quote from Abby that I read in her blog that got stucked in my head is, “I firmly believe that you can talk and talk and complain and empathize with others, but to change your life, you must actually change … your … life.”

How did you discover your passion for travelling?
When I was 11, I begged my parents to let me join a high school group on a trip to Europe. I can’t believe they said yes. What were they thinking? I’ve been hooked ever since.
What’s the most horrible experience that you’ve had on the road?
On my second trip to Europe, when I was 13, all of my stuff was stolen from our bus. I was an emotional teenager without her parents. It was not my proudest moment! Last year, my stuff was stolen again — this time on my fourth night in my teensy tiny new house in Costa Rica. This time, I think I handled the situation a bit better!
What’s the best travel experience that you’ve ever had?
My first trip to Thailand and China was pretty magical — I guess I was looking to get a certain spark back! I’d also have to say that this past year in Costa Rica changed my life, which was kind of on a downslide. So that’s pretty great, too!
What’s the biggest realization that you’ve got out of travelling?
I’m addicted because there’s always more to see. Plus, no matter where you go, you can find similarities in the people around you. That search for things that are new and different, yet the discovery of the connections between all of us, is pretty special.
What keeps you going? What keeps you motivated?
I think the difference between someone who doesn’t get it and a travel junkie is that travel tires out some and re-energizes the rest of us!
This is a silly and hypothetical one. If you would be given a chance to travel with a popular person or a celebrity, who would it be and why?
I honestly can’t think of a single celebrity I’d want to travel with, at least not the Hollywood kind! Maybe Anthony Bourdain, which is the cheat’s way to answer. But it’s true!
Where’s your favourite place in this planet and why?
I could never answer that! I even moved around too much growing up to have a de facto “home” to call a favorite.
What do you think about yourself?
Resilient! I’m proud of myself after what I went through these past two years; it was a tough, tough year for a lot of us. I’m very focused at work, but can be a bit all over the place in almost every other area of my life. I talk fast. I also talk a lot, although I’m terrified of public speaking. I’m fun, and I get a kick out of myself.
I started The Jungle Princess when I was a city girl living in a small pueblo of 3,000 people in Costa Rica. It is, however, being relaunched soon as a site that will cover my adventures in Las Vegas. Stay tuned! – Abby Tegnelia
